Harriet Hale Wooley Scholarship for American Artists and Musicians - Scholarship

Up to four scholarships are awarded annually to graduate and post-graduate American students in the visual fine arts (painting, graphic design, print-making, sculpture, photography) and music (composition, instrumental or vocal performance). The scholarship is not intended for research in art history, musicology, or composition, nor for dance or theater. Successful candidates propose a unique and detailed project related to their study which requires residency in Paris. This project should include enrollment in a recognized French art school or music conservatory. The scholarship is for nine months.

Applicants must:

  • possess American citizenship
  • be between 21 and 29 years of age
  • have graduated with high academic standing from an American college, university or professional school. Preference is given to mature students who have already done some graduate study.
  • show evidence of high-level artistic or musical accomplishment
  • propose a unique and detailed artistic project related to their field of study which requires a one-year residency in Paris. This project should include enrollment in a recognized French art or music school. It is strongly suggested that the candidate establishes contact with a teacher or institution prior to arriving in France.
  • have good moral character, personality and adaptability. They must also be in good physical health and emotional stability.

Award amount:

  • A €10,000 stipend (may vary subject to fund earnings) for the upcoming academic year.
  • A rent-controlled live-in artist atelier or music studio at the Fondation des Etats-Unis.
  • Access to on-site performance and exhibition facilities, including a private art gallery and a historically significant concert hall.
